Intro to Acting

Course Reflection

At first, I was surprised that Acting could be part of my General Education program. After reflecting on what I’ve learned this past semester from this class, I realized that I have actually learned and applied a lot. This class forced me out of my comfort zone and taught me the value of art. It taught me that getting out of my comfort zone isn’t necessarily bad as it has helped me become more open and understanding with others. It made me appreciate art in a new way by making me realize what it takes to be an actor and the creativity needed behind everyone’s role.

Before taking this class, I found myself to be very closed in with my emotions and feelings. One of the requirements of this class was to get out of your comfort zone and experience a range of emotions. This ended up doing a lot to me and I felt very uncomfortable during the first part of the semester. After opening up more to the class, I felt much more engaged and learned how to apply this to outside of class. When I did this, I noticed a more positive interaction with my friends and co-workers.

In addition to discovering my comfort level, I also learned a lot about the art and science of acting. I learned that acting is an art in that it requires a great deal of creativity and is also a science in that multiple methods are tried and tested each rehearsal. Experiencing theatre from the other side of the curtain has made me appreciate the art even more so. My fellow classmates/actors this semester all have one thing in common. The all have a tremendously positive attitude, are extremely supportive, and wonderfully creative and innovative. I don’t think I would’ve been able to perform the way I did near the end of the semester without my fellow classmates.
