Course Reflection

Did your article, or things you saw in your search for articles, change the way you think about science? Did you see evidence of scientists actively engaged in public policy debates, and were you surprised by their level of advocacy?

When I read the article I was researching on, I noticed a distinct difference in how it was written vs an article that was written on a more popular blog or news site. The article was very factual and straight to the point. Whereas other more popular news sites and blogs are very engaging and attention grabbing as they're in the market for grabbing more money. It made me think how to look for scientifically sound sources vs ones that may be more fabricated just for views. I didn't really notice any articles about any current events or debates, or at least any debates that I'm aware of.

Discuss how your article made connections to another discipline, like business, government, politics, economics, or humanities. If it didn’t make any connections to other disciplines, discuss a connection it could have made.

In the article I researched, it talked about a type of fluid chip that can process different types of fluids inputted into it. This made me think of how a computer works. A computer has multiple chips inside it and each chip takes multiple data inputs, processes the data, and outputs new data. This Body-on-a-Chip does essentially the exact same thing, but instead of inputting electricity, it inputs body fluids.

Describe how the class as a whole has impacted your views on science, the human body, and human impacts on the planet.

This class has opened my mind to so many things that I was either confused about before or was completely oblivious to. I learned that (contrary to popular belief), a Theory is a concept that's practically true, instead of being half true or there's still a lot of uncertainty remaining. On the human body side, while reading through our textbook, I kept reflecting back to my own body and imagining all the activities happening inside me all at once. It made me understand more on what happens when we're infected with certain diseases or why certain genetic illnesses occur the way they do on a molecular level. It also made me reflect on how we're part of a worldwide ecosystem and that what we do to our planet, even the smallest things, can have a major impact on all species around the globe.
